Editor settings

The Settings dialog holds your preferences for the editor: they apply to every project and are not part of any game. This page covers each page of the dialog: the theme and accent color, autosave and the code editor, the viewport's grid, snapping and zoom, the renderer, and changing keyboard shortcuts. Settings that belong to a game, such as its input actions, are in Project settings.

Open the dialog with Ctrl,, the gear button at the right of the app bar, or Edit › Settings…. Changes apply and are saved at once; Done closes the dialog. Reset to defaults, at the bottom of the sidebar, restores every setting.

External code editoremptyThe command that opens a file at a line, for scripts and for double-clicking errors in the console

The external code editor command uses {file}, {line} and {column} where the file and position go:

Riderrider --line {line} {file}

Left empty, the editor uses Visual Studio Code or Rider when either is installed, and otherwise your system's default program for the file.

Rendering

SettingDefaultWhat it does
RendererProject settingWhich renderer the editor uses for the scene view and play mode: the one the project sets, Automatic, Vulkan or Skia. Applies when a project opens.

Use it to try your game with the other renderer, or to fall back to Skia if your graphics driver has trouble with Vulkan, without changing the project.

Keyboard

Every command of the editor is listed with its category and shortcut.

Recording a new shortcut for Play from start scene.
  1. Type in Search commands or shortcuts to find a command by name, category or keys, such as play or Ctrl+Shift.
  2. Click the command's shortcut. It reads Press keys….
  3. Press the new keys. Press Escape to cancel.

When another command already uses the keys, the row says so, in the warning color: Also used by and the other command. Both keep the keys until you change one of them. The × button removes a shortcut, and the restore button, shown on changed shortcuts, returns to the default. Reset all restores every default shortcut.

F1, or Help › Keyboard shortcuts, shows every shortcut as a sheet you can search, including the ones you changed. See Keyboard shortcuts.

Where settings are saved

Settings are saved in settings.json in your user's application data folder, together with your recent projects and recently run commands:

SystemFolder
Windows%APPDATA%\Talesmith
Linux~/.config/Talesmith

On macOS it is the Talesmith folder in the application data folder .NET uses for your user.

Each project's own editor state, such as its layout and viewport cameras, is in its .talesmith folder instead. See Project folder layout.
